Van Dyke Angus Ranch
Ranch News - January-February 2000

February 8, 2000
Things are going real good here, weather has been super, it got all the way up to 56 degrees today.  Calving is going real well, we are kind of slow right now, I guess the weather is to nice, maybe they are waiting for a real good storm to come in.
Our bull sale is only 3 weeks away, we are starting to get some pretty good interest so hopefully it will go well.
We are going to go down to the Midland bull test on Friday to look at the bulls, we are also going to run over to the Beartooth Ranch to look at a couple of bull calves that they have.
The Dutch calves are sure looking good again this year, also the Lucy Boy 2000 calves are on the ground and we are pleasantly surprised with the birth weights on him, it appears that he may very well be a heifer bull.  The calves have tremendous eye appeal and it will be interesting to see how they grow.

Everything is going super here, temperatures are in the 40's during the day and down to the 20's at night, perfect calving weather.  We are still on a big run of bulls however on the embryo transplant calves we are getting over two thirds heifers.
We semen tested all of the bulls that will be in our spring production sale, it went very well and did not have to reject any of them.

The sale catalogs should be out some time this week so if you do not receive one let us know and we will do our best to get one to you.

GDAR Dutch is currently at our place right now, he will be here through the bull sale.  He is a super powerful bull that is very masculine with fantastic muscle.  I cannot say enough good things about the bull.  His calves are always among our very best and the people that are stopping by like them also.

We are finally getting some winter here in Montana, we received about 4 inches today.  Calving is going along real well.  We have around 200 calves on the ground so far with about 150 to go.  Started out with a lot of heifers and as of late the only thing we can get are bulls.  We started getting our first Lucy Boy 2000 calves and are quite surprised with the birth weights, they are averaging around 82 lbs. on mature cows, who knows, maybe he will be a heifer bull!

Our sale catalogs are being printed right now and should be out in about a week or so.  We started clipping the bulls today and that should take around 3 days.  The first week in February we will start to semen test the bulls so we have lots of fun things to do along with calving.

My new years resolution is this, to get to work on the web page. Nathan Hammontree has agreed to do the updates on our web site and I hope to be a little bit more frequent with this than once every 18 months.

We are started calving again, have about 75 new ones at this time. The weather has been super so it has not been that much work. We ultrasounded the bulls last week Saturday so we could have that information available in the sale catalog.

Keep checking back, I will do better this time around!
